Steel for a new international terminal at the Calgary International Airport will be supplied in part by Supermétal Structures Inc., Western Division and its Leduc plant near Edmonton, which employs around 100 people.
According to the company, Supermétal was awarded a $30-million contract “to fabricate and erect 5,600 tons of structural steel” for the airport’s east concourse, the single largest expansion undertaken at the airport, “to meet international passenger demand for one of the fastest-growing route sectors.”

The main 183,500-square-metre building will include five levels and 22 aircraft gates. It will open in the fourth quarter of 2015. EllisDon Construction Services Inc. is the construction manager.
Over the past few years, Supermétal has been involved in a number of projects based in western Canada, including fabricating and erecting structural steel for facilities in the oilsands as well as the award-winning Eighth Avenue Place office tower in downtown Calgary.
“Undoubtedly, the Leduc facility has been key to our success in providing enhanced, localized service,” Supermétal president and chief executive officer Jean-Francois Blouin said in a statement. “Our commitment to the region is stronger than ever as we look forward [to] contributing to the growing economy.”
