In 1973, Alberta legislation required all welders of pressure equipment to be tested. Qualimet Inc. came into business to meet that demand.  Thirty-eight years later, Qualimet has met many, many more demands. Not only does it have a welder testing centre, but now also offers services such as equipment certification and inspections as well as structural steel services and metallurgical consulting services.

Gary LaFleur, business development and inspection services manager, describes Qualimet as a consulting welding engineering company.

Suppose a refinery, pipeline, or oilsands project is being built and there is a need for vessels, pipes or tanks. Qualimet develops the procedures that the welders will use to manufacture the project, has it approved by the governing bodies and certifies the product for use.

Qualimet also provides inspection services and testing of structural steel. For Edmonton’s still-under-construction new remand centre, the company was responsible for over a hundred structural steel inspections. The company has inspected the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science at the University of Alberta and the additions and expansion at Commonwealth Stadium.

Another service Qualimet offers is failure analysis. The staff can look at a problem of any kind (including tanks and trailers, lifting equipment, pipelines, structures, and heavy equipment) and figure out how the problem happened and how to prevent that same thing from occurring in the future.

Qualimet has a fully equipped metallurgical testing laboratory and its engineers can recommend materials, assist with quote preparations, interpret codes and standards, develop procedures and investigate any incidents and accidents. The staff comes equipped with a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering, Professional Engineers, Registered Engineering Technologists, Certified Engineering Technologists, CWB Level III Certified Inspectors, CGSB Certified Technicians, and over 100 years of relevant combined experience.

The company works with many industries, including mining, petrochemicals, the pipeline industry, highway transportation, and pulp and paper companies. Also, Qualimet will go anywhere in the world and has worked in such places as China and the Middle East.

Finally, Qualimet and its staff believe in giving back. In the last couple of years alone, they have participated in the Japanese tsunami and Pakistan flood relief efforts, Olympic Torch Run, and Chile earthquake and Haiti earthquake relief efforts.
