Abraxus Construction Group LP has come a long ways since it was incorporated in 1998 as a small carbon steel pipe spooling fabrication shop. All it takes is one visit to the company’s 21-acre facility in Edmonton to see that this is a big facility.
Since it was founded, Abraxus has added skid assemblies, pipe modules and extensive alloy fabrication. Today the shop includes: 50,000 sq ft. of fabrication area, an isolated stainless steel bay, two exterior crane ways, one 20-ton, two 10-tons, and six 5-ton cranes. Fabrication equipment includes a computerized cutting table, four sets of 12-ton rollers, 50 welding machines, 18 STT machines, and two sub-arc machines.

Alan Clark, Vice President, still remembers the company’s first large project — an upgrader expansion in 2004. “It was to fabricate spools with Hastelloy overlay,” he recalls, adding that the “highlight of this project was two 42” (Sea Serpent) spools. This opened the door to the oilsands and enabled us to work on most of the subsequent major projects in some capacity.”
Abraxus’s projects range in size from $25,000 to $25 million. The company’s client list includes Syncrude Canada, Enbridge Pipelines and TCPL. Abraxus supplied many of the modules for PetroCanada’s hydrogen plant in Edmonton and was responsible for a total of 110,000 unfactored inches of spooling for the MNU Project at Suncor.

The company has a QC and drafting department to design, verify and ensure quality standards are met. The department has experience with all applicable codes (ASME PP, S & U) and standards and maintains knowledge in process, structural, and mechanical construction.
One of the things that Abraxus is most proud of is its safety policy. Its safety standards exceed that of the industry and it considers the safety of employees to be the “prime core value” of the company.
